A Generous Spirit: Celebrating Caleb’s Life

Caleb Ashby brought to each person he met a warm, welcoming smile and a deep appreciation for the things that make life meaningful — music, art, friendship and the connections that bring people together. Now, through a generous planned gift to Trillium House, his legacy will help provide comfort, dignity and compassionate care to individuals and families throughout our community.

Ashby, 56, of Marquette, passed away August 28, 2026, following a long illness, with his mother, Judith “Judy” Ashby, at his side. His gift will support the Dan Mazzuchi Care Fund (DMCF) at Trillium House, to provide around-the-clock support for individuals receiving hospice support services. The fund helps reduce financial barriers for individuals and families who might otherwise struggle to afford care during one of life’s most difficult transitions.

For those who knew Caleb, his generosity is another meaningful part of a life shaped by an appreciation for the people and experiences that mattered most.

Raised in Marquette, Caleb graduated from Marquette Senior High School in 1988 and Northern Michigan University in 1993. He began his professional career in television, working in the Master Control Department at CBS in Green Bay, Wisconsin. He later returned to Marquette, where he worked independently as a digital creator.

Caleb had an enduring love of music, from The Beatles, ABBA and Genesis to Journey and The Doors. He enjoyed the films, television and popular culture of his generation and found inspiration in art, particularly the paintings of Vincent van Gogh.

Even as illness limited his activities over the years, music, art and friendships remained sources of comfort and enjoyment. His warm smile and welcoming nature were part of the way he connected with others, leaving memories that family and friends continue to cherish.

A Gift That Will Make a Lasting Difference
Caleb’s generosity will have a tangible impact on the families served by Trillium House.

The Dan Mazzuchi Care Fund honors the vision of Trillium House’s founder, Dr. Dan Mazzuchi, who believed that everyone deserves compassionate, dignified care at the end of life, regardless of financial circumstances.

Through the fund, Trillium House provides financial assistance on a sliding scale, helping families access care without the additional burden of overwhelming financial concerns. Over the past three years, approximately 55 percent of Trillium House residents have received assistance through the fund.

For families navigating a loved one’s final days, that support can mean meaningful time together, fewer financial worries and the reassurance that their loved one is receiving attentive, compassionate care – allowing each person to live out their journey in a way that honors them.

Trillium House relies on charitable contributions to help meet an annual financial assistance need of approximately $175,000, making planned gifts especially meaningful to the organization’s long-term sustainability.

Beyond its financial impact, Caleb’s gift is a reminder that generosity can extend far beyond one’s lifetime. Through thoughtful estate planning, individuals can continue supporting the people, causes and communities they care about, creating opportunities for compassion to reach future generations.
